Don’t discount the power of planting seeds.
When we face barriers to implementing equity-driven mindsets and practices, we often focus on identifying immediate solutions.
We also tend to celebrate folks and teams that facilitate change in real-time. Because it’s observable and we can bear witness to the roles they played.
But what about change that happens slowly over time?
Barriers can take months or years to dismantle or circumvent. Change rarely happens overnight.
But even the hardest concrete walls and ground can eventually give way to plants that grow within the cracks.
However, the seeds have to be planted first.
So don’t underestimate or undervalue the small moments or opportunities to advocate for change within your work or organization. To demonstrate a different way of doing or being. To model a different approach for others to experience.
You may never see what blossoms from the seeds you plant or tend.
But that’s not the point, right?
We plant seeds to encourage growth, not always to take ownership of whatever blooms. So don’t forget about planting seeds.
