Design is an emergent process largely driven by learning.
That means we need to:
- Do the learning.
- Listen and remain open to what we learn.
- Forge a path forward based on learning.
It takes work to do all three. But that last one can be particularly tricky. Sometimes, folks fixate on an idea they already have and may not actually be open to shifting based on what they’ve learned. Other times, our organizations and/or funders say they’re “on the emergent design” journey…but really have their sights set on one specific destination.
In other words: It’s hard to pivot when you’re attached to a specific pathway or when you’re getting pressure to stick to a specific course. (Even when that course doesn’t make much sense.)
That’s why we need to embrace learning and change. To collaborate with team members who will challenge our assumptions and biases with care. To partner with organizations and funders who are truly open to the process.
Because sometimes, we need to adjust our plans. And that’s okay!
It’s far better to shift in response to what you are learning than to stay on the less effective (or potentially even harmful) course. We all need to embrace learning and change.
